A little background....

In 1989, a group of womyn within M.E.Ch.A. started Semana de la Xicana. They recognized the need to address issues of la mujer in the Chicana/o community. It is now an annual event dedicated to celeberating Chicana identity and herstory.

This year we would like to emphasize the power that the arts have politically and how they give Xicanas voice.

Mirame- March 11, 2014

6pm, ENVD 134

This event will focus on the visual arts that express what our words cannot. We will be hosting live art exhibitions as well as creating a community mural. Come learn about Xicana art and history, as well as be a part of creating a communal piece.

Escúchame- March 12, 2014 6pm, Atlas 100

We will be hosting New York City performer Yadira de la RIva, as she takes us through her journey growing up living within two countries and two cultures.

Explicate- March 13, 2014 6:30pm, ENVD 134

Join us in a night of spoken word. Come listen to a few great local artists from Café Cultura and fellow students tell us their stories through beautiful spoken word!

Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority, Inc. would like to invite you all to our 12th Annual Women of Juarez Awareness Campaign, in which we discuss the femicide taking place in Cd. Juarez, Mexico and bring light to this devastating situation.

 This year's series of events include:

“Exprésate ”Tuesday, November 12th at 6 pm in UMC Dennis Smalls Cultural Center -

Art workshop where you’ll learn the significance of the crosses and dresses that we display on Norlin Quad. You will then have the opportunity to decorate your own dress or cross to display.

“Noche de Testimonios” Wednesday, November 13th at 6 pm in Atlas 100 - 

Irma Casas is the director of Casa Amiga, the first rape crisis center in Ciudad Juarez. She will discuss the femicides that occurred as well as bring video testimonials of mothers that have been affected by these incidents.

"Reviviendo la Memoria" Thursday, November 14th at 6 pm in UMC Dennis Smalls Cultural Center -

A presentation from the Interactive Theatre Project that will focus on the issue of violence against women in relation to what is occurring in Juarez, Mexico followed by an interactive discussion. ***THERE WILL BE FOOD AT ALL THE EVENTS!! :) ***On behalf of all our Sisters, we would like to thank you for partaking in these events and we hope to see you all there!

Pi Lambda Chi will be hosting three days of events to bring awareness of the brutal murders of over 500 women in Ciudad Juárez, which has ignited a new exploration of what it means to commit a crime based on hate.

"El Traspatio" - Translated, 'The Backyard', a film of an explicit reality demonstrating the corruption and injustices that are going on south of the border.

Award-winning Xicana writer, Stella Pope presents:
"If I Die in Juarez" WE CAN NO LONGER LOOK AWAY
Not only is she a big advocate, but an American Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize nominee. Stella Pope Duarte focuses on the murders of women in Ciudad Juárez in her novel, IF I DIE IN JUAREZ. Investigating the crimes for three years in Ciudad Juárez, Duarte explores ways to heal society's deepest wounds through activism and artistic expression.

Friday, April 5th [6:00pm - 12:00am]

Join the Brothers of the Lambda Chapter of the Most Honorable Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. and the Finest Ladies of the Alpha Chapter of Pi Lambda Chi Latina Sorority Inc. on April 5, 2013 as we bring back Noche de Baile! The night will begin with a dance workshop where students will learn different genres of dance in the Latin culture; including, bachata, salsa, cumbia, and a few others. After the workshop portion of the event, we will host GRUPO KAOBA from Denver LIVE in the Glenn Miller Ballroom for an open floor dance. This event is FREE and open to the public!
